About Mike V. Clark

Mike V. Clark writes about what happens on the inside of sport, the part that doesn't show up in box scores.

His interest in youth sports psychology grew out of a simple observation: the physical side of athletic development gets enormous attention. Technique, conditioning, tactics, nutrition. The mental side (how a young athlete thinks under pressure, how they recover from failure, how they relate to competition) often gets almost none.

That gap struck him as worth addressing. Winning the Inner Game is the book he wished had been available earlier.

Mike's writing draws on established sports psychology research and adapts it for the real world: for athletes who are still figuring things out, and for the parents and coaches who are trying to support them without adding to the pressure. He tends to be skeptical of advice that sounds good but doesn't hold up in the back seat of a car after a tough loss.

He believes the mental tools that help young athletes perform (focus, emotional recovery, genuine confidence, the ability to push through discomfort) are the same tools that help kids navigate everything else. Sports, he thinks, is one of the better places to build them.
